Every cultural movement is bound to draw both positive and negative reactions from both ends of the scale. New things always coexist with criticisms, hates, rants and oppositions. There are always sets of intellectuals, fundamentalist and purist born out of a movement—and this social media craze does not pass the exemption.
Social media naysayers may be small in number compared to millions and billions of social networking sites, sharing and submission sites, and even blog fans and users, but they are indeed dangerous. They are growing in number; there are accounts that they are seriously founding organizations and campaigns to educate people about their unexplainable anger against social media sites. And what they choose to boycott are not just Facebook and Twitter, but all forms of social medias sites, From WordPress to Digg to Foursquare to Google+, as long as it creates a network of happy connecting individuals, they will automatically despise it.
Are they really that dangerous?
Do we really need to worry about these naysayers? We can say we do not need to. We can say that we do not really care and we can just leave these naysayers and let them do what they want. We can look at the million numbers of Facebook and Twitter users and convince ourselves that the less-than-a-thousand naysayers can do nothing to harm the entire industry. Yes, we can do that. But as a responsible Internet marketer, we should be worried about young aspirants who have dreams and plans of making it big in this industry. Since these naysayers are having difficulties convincing the almost uncountable social media believers, they are now shifting gears and targeting startup online marketers. We know that these startups have minds of their own, but we have a responsibility to protect their road to success with these naysayers. For this, we can use our Twitter, Facebook, and blogs to alert the startups, to tell the entire Web about these sour graping naysayers.
Social media naysayers’ existence is a living proof of social media’s undeniable efficiency. Why would these naysayers waste time on hating such useful sites? Because they have seen how it improves business and lives? Perhaps they are just jealous or what. We don’t know the real answer. But as for us who love social media, for us who see its real benefits to our lives, all we can do to annoy them more is to continue using these sites, as if we are teasing them like an excessively contented child with a new toy on his hand.
The simple yet effective defense
The Internet marketing superstar says it all. According to P. Seiple, fighting naysayers are just a total waste of time, and instead of wasting our precious hours with these negative thinkers, all we have to do is put our guard down, smile and them. She reiterates that we should always react speedily, apologize effusively and publicly, and don’t neglect to say many thanks for their feedback; tackle damaging comments as quickly as you can to avert them from bubbling up into something possibly much more harmful.
