If you use FeedBurner for your feed, they take care of all the pinging for you don’t they? I hope so, because that’s what I’ve been relying on :D

You’re right, Feedburner does it very well. But they only limit pinging to 11 services total. You can add your own services through your blog’s admin but you can’t find out which ones are still working and which ones aren’t. The plugin itself has a log file which records which services work so we can eliminate those which don’t. :)

Ahhh, gotcha. That makes sense. For someone like me who’s obviously not well-versed in pinging, what is the value in pinging as many services as we can?

Well, it’s the more the merrier thing :) . But it’s not like our blog depends on how many services are pinged. The number of services provided by Feedburner is enough I think. But we can add more if we want to.It’s like releasing a press release to a number of national newspapers, they will mostly cover the whole country. But you can also tell the local news additionally.
By the way, I’ve just posted an article to have more services pinged by our Feedburner.
