Renting Your Place

So you’re moving out of mom and dad’s house, you have your title loan, your car and all of your stuff and you’re going to have your very own place. When first moving out of mom and dad’s place, most people will start with renting an apartment. Although shopping for an apartment might seem pretty clear cut, there are certain things you should keep an eye out for before making your decision.  There are certain tactics that can be used to help you successfully make a decision and get a good deal.

Renting comes with its own set of good and bad things, and there are certain issues that every tenant is likely to face. One important aspect of renting an apartment is location. Make sure to find a location that is suitable to your needs. For instance if you don’t own a car, make sure that you get an apartment that is close to the subway or bus station.

Keep in mind that most landlords expect you to sign a lease. Most leases are a year, but if you’re only planning to stay there for 6 months, you need to find a place that will be more flexible for you. Breaking a lease costs money and is pretty expensive. So make sure that you know what the leasing options are before you fall in love with an apartment. Some apartments also have restrictions on things such as pets or might charge extra for having a roommate.

Try to negotiate a deal with your landlord. Sometimes you may be able to get a small reduction in rent. If the apartment has been empty for a while the landlord might be anxious to rent and offer a small percentage off of the price to get it rented as soon as possible.  If there are tons of apartments available in the city where you live, then you may be able to get an even better deal, and sometimes with cable and utilities included. You should also find out about things like whether or not the landlord has access to your apartment. Understand your rights as a tenant and understand what is ethical and what is not.

In most cases you will have to put down first and last as well as a security deposit. If this is the case, you should have at least a few thousand dollars saved up in the bank for those things, as well as enough money to move in and buy the things that you might need to get started. If you are going to have a roommate make sure that you have them sign a lease and write up a terms of agreement. Problems sometimes arise with roommates taking what does not belong to them, or leaving without paying for their last month’s rent. So make sure to cover your bases and protect yourself against these things.

Moving into a new place can be stressful and expensive, but with the right preparations you can avoid all the stress associated with moving in to a new apartment.
