A printer will produce a hard copy of any document from your computer. Printers can use paper, transparencies and other media. Printers can be connected using a cable or wireless connection. Network printers will have networking interfaces so that many different computers can connect to one printer. Many times individual printers can sometimes be used to support network connections.
There are also special types of printers that can directly connect to memory sticks, memory cards and other types of image capture devices such as digital cameras. You can also find printers that contain a combination of functions such as faxing, photocopying and scanning. These types of printers are known as multifunction printers, multi-function devices and all in one printer.
There are also versions of printers that will connect directly to memory sticks, image capture devices and memory cards. There are also multiple function printers that also have photocopy functions, a fax machine and scanner. These combination printers go by the name of multifunction printers, all in one printers and multi-function devices.
The way that the document is printed also varies. Laser printers and ink jet printers are the two most common types of printers. Ink jet printers will apply the ink directly to the paper using inkjet heads or a fabric ribbon. With this type of printing the ink penetrates deep into the paper making these documents very difficult to alter. Laser printers use solid inks or toner and the ink does not penetrate the paper so these documents can be altered easily.
Laser printing works using the xerographic principle which is also the main function behind photocopying. Toner is applied to a light sensitive drum and then an elective charge is needed to transfer the toner onto the paper. Then heat and pressure ensures that the toner sticks to the paper. Laser printers are very popular because they have low cost per copy (only for black and white), produce high quality printouts and can print very fast.
There are black and white laser printers available as well as color laser printers. Some of the newest printers use LED instead of lasers for printing. A concern with printers can be the dust and air pollution that they create. Studies have shown this to be harmful to your health. However the newest printers have eliminated this and if you keep your printer in a well ventilated space then it is not an issue.
A thermal printer is one type of inkless printers. A thermal printer will heat specific sections of heat sensitive paper and are used mainly on older fax machines, cash registers, gasoline dispensers and ATMs. You can even do color thermal printing if you have the right type of paper.
