Caching plugins have been doing a great job in speeding up WordPress blogs. I used WP-Cache earlier and found it really helped my blog’s load speed. However, I often needed to put them off for a while everytime I was going to make changes to my blog’s structure or layout. Since I still make small modifications to my blog’s appearance and switching the plugin on and off sounds like an extra work for me, I decided to delete them form my plugins list. Another reason is there are other plugins which utilize the latest data in order to be working properly. Such as the popularity contest, and post ratings plugin.
Until, there’s an alternative that serves the same function as caching plugins do. PHP Speedy plugin works by mashing up together all the appropriate files (like CSS and javascript files) and compressed them. This results in a significant difference in the page’s load time. See the example of the test result in the PHP Speedy plugin page. While you’re there, you can download the plugin and install it on your own blog. Then you can run tests using the following tool:
- OctaGate Site Timer
- Yahoo YSlow tool for Firefox – this one requires some plugins to be installed on FireFox
