So Valentine’s Day is around the corner and you know you have to send some flowers and its usually one dozen roses or some other variant of flower The number in the bouquet is usually constant – one dozen or twelve depending on what you prefer to call it. Some people may find the idea and the practice confusing. Why go for exactly one dozen roses? What is so special about that number and why won’t a number like ten or five suffice for our message of love? In fact people often do things out of habit that they don’t know the background to but when talking about buying one dozen roses, the background is simple enough but people aren’t generally aware of it.
It’s a well understood concept that flowers are about romance or affection. This has been the case for longer than we can remember, the art of sending flowers is something that we have been doing so long that not many of us know anything about how and when the practice started. Sure, you hear some stories but no one quite knows for sure which genius started the practice. One thing is for sure though – one dozen roses is the universally adopted way of expressing affection so we can safely go about sending our twelve red roses knowing very well that the message is going to be understood.
The idea of a dozen roses of flowers of any other variety has to do with the special character of 12 as a number. Twelve – or one dozen – has important connotations both historically and in modern thinking. There are twelve signs of the zodiac, we all know there is 12 months in a year and there are other things as well that are easily organized in groups of a dozen (a crate of eggs included). However the art of sending a dozen roses usually has nothing to do with eggs or the zodiac, its more in tune with the twelve months of the year where the significance of one dozen roses (and not only roses – other flowers will do as well) could stand for the eternal love – as expressed by one rose for each month of the year.
Despite the tradition, there are people who like to do things their own way, Some deliver their flowers in terms of the number of months or years which the relationship has lasted, the number of birthdays the person has celebrated or any other significant number which is of importance to them and the person they are giving the flowers to.
But to be on the safe side – go for one dozen roses. Red.
