No Bark Dog Collars: Are They Harmful or Harmless?

There are currently three types of no bark dog collars commonly used on dogs. They are all effective in reducing barking, but some people wonder if using these collars are ethical. If you have a dog, you should know some basic information about no bark collars before getting one for your dog.

Spray Collars

There are no bark collars that spray the dog’s muzzle with citrus smell if the dog keeps barking. Because the smell of citrus is not pleasant for dogs, they will eventually stop barking. Some collars also give a warning “hiss” sound, so the dog can stop barking before the smell is sprayed on its muzzle if he listens and heeds the warning sound. Trainers and professionals consider the use of these collars ethical, as there is no pain inflicted on the dog.

Sonic and Ultrasonic Dog Collars

Ultrasonic or sonic dog collars will emit a high pitched tone if the dog barks. This tone is similar to the dog whistle sound. Humans can’t hear this sound, but dogs can, and they soon learn to stop barking so that the sound goes away. Dog trainers and veterinarians see no problem with these collars, as they aren’t harmful. All they do is create a bit of annoyance to the dog. Note: This is the least effective type of no bark collar, as dogs can get used to the sound over time, so don’t overdo it.

Electronic No Bark Dog Collars

These collars work by delivering a small electrical shock to the dog’s neck whenever it starts barking. The shock isn’t painful, it’s similar to what you feel when you handle fabrics or walk over a rug. Due to its name, people think that this type of collar is cruel and unethical and shouldn’t be used on animals. The main reason why these people consider this collar unethical is that it actually causes a physical stimulus that can be felt by the dog. And well, some people think that’s not ok. However, these collars are very effective for reducing excessive barking, so take them at least into consideration.

To deter a dog from barking excessively, you can choose from no bark collars that use citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic shocking. Most people have no problems with spray collars or sonic collars, but the idea of an electrical shock makes them think that shock collars aren’t good for dogs. However, none of these methods are harmful or dangerous.
