Misconceptions And Realities About Hypnosis

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be occult whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Given below are some general beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood easily with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. Even people who have observed hypnosis on others mostly refuse to believe in it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But that is simply not the truth. Even people with strong will power can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. An individual under hypnosis does not get shut off from the outside world, but remains completely aware of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes entirely and is thus able to concentrate fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the world’s population, and this is another common myth. Although, the finding has some element of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers used the same hypnosis technique for everyone. One hypnosis technique for all is not a workable solution as different people come under different personality types, and thus respond to different techniques.

Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got no involvement of communication, whereas communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.

Another misconception is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive behaviour like eating too much and chain smoking, and by heightening one’s motivation levels, hypnosis can usher in vital physical alterations in an individual and pave the way for a healthier body.

If an individual falls for all the wrong notions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a better and healthier life.
