How to Get Rid of Spam on Your WordPress

This is a guest post written by Gracie Roloff. Gracie runs MyGetRidOfGuide, a website that offers several ways to get rid of anything that is unwanted.

When we take time to make a really nice website that is both beneficial to our readers and ourselves, we do anything we can to improve it and avoid spammers.

Spamming is an annoying thing that unfortunately occurs all the time.  Between people commenting a bunch of gibberish or even links on your articles, it can make your website less worthy and instantly come off as less authoritive.  If you’re running into this problem on your WordPress, here are some tips for you to consider!

Easy ways to reduce spam on your wordpress

Akismet: Akismet is probably your best option to fight against spam on your WordPress.  It’s a simple plug-in you install to catch 99.9% of spam that comes to your website.  As always, there will be one or two comments popping up every now and then that it doesn’t catch, but those can easily be erased or submitted to your spam folder.

Add auto-publish: You should always make sure your comments are on auto-publish.  This means you can approve them, send them to the trash, or to your spam folder before they are published on your site.  This also makes it so no one else sees the spam but you.

Close comments: Once you write an article for your site, you can leave the comments open for a little while, but it’s recommended that you close them after so long.  Spammers like to target sites that older and are more Google friendly, therefore they go for articles that have been up for a long time.

Spam Karma 2: This is another option for a plug-in.  This plug-in has software that runs to prevent spam from coming on your site, and it also grades the comments using “karma”.  It’s great at sorting spam from real comments.

Spam is definitely something that you want to look out for on your site.  If you notice a comment coming from a “name” that is just a “keyword” you can almost automatically mark it as spam.  You should always avoid those kinds, as well as comments with links.

If you approve comments that are spam, it can hurt your site, lower your rankings in Google, and it can make all your hard work worthless.  No one takes spammy websites seriously, as they are highly avoided.  So, make your website great, beneficial to your readers, and spam free using these tips!
