The social networking site known as Facebook was started in 2004. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. As of this year, Facebook has amassed more than 750 million users worldwide. Facebook is based on the initial book that is given to college students their first day on campus to become accustomed with their fellow classmates.
The way Facebook works is simple; you sign up and create a profile. In this profile you can tell as much about yourself as you would like. There is a wall where you can post photos and write a little bit of what you are feeling and doing. Facebook allows you to set your own privacy settings and permit which users you invite and allow viewing your profile. As a user you can exchange messages and even join special interest groups on Facebook. Many people share common interests such as their work, school, college or other characteristics. . Facebook also utilizes various applications which plug into your profile. These applications are games, puzzles and other additions which you can add to your profile page.
Facebook started as a Harvard concept by Mark Zuckerberg. Eventually it spread out across the country to other colleges and universities. Eventually Facebook made its way across the ocean to the United Kingdom and beyond. Now Facebook is all over the world. Facebook is the most used social networking website in the world. A 2009 survey showed that even though the User Agreement states a user must be thirteen years or older, there are 7.5 million users under the age of thirteen uses Facebook which goes against the sites terms of use. Facebook has roughly 138.9 million monthly visitors from the United States alone. As of April of 2010, Facebook has almost 42 percent of the United States population has a Facebook account. However with all that amazing growth in both users and stock, Facebook has also lost close to seven million active users in North America; including the United States, Canada and Mexico in May of 2011.
Most of Facebook’s revenue is from advertising. Microsoft is Facebook’s exclusive partner in banner advertisements. This means only advertisements from Facebook are shown on the website’s scrolling banners. Even though it is the most widely used website on the internet, Facebook has an extremely low click through rate than most other major websites. However with all these small drawbacks Facebook still remains a monster of the internet today.
