Getting into the Blogging Habit

Building a blog is a tempting prospect, being able to write about things that excite you the most. There are plenty of reasons to start writing and there are more than enough people out there waiting to give you advice on what to do and how to do it. However, blogging is a personal thing and if you are looking to create your own blog, your style and way of doing things will be completely unique.

One of the key things is to observe some basic criteria and you’ll be all set to kick your blog off in fine style.

Blogging isn’t about the design of the blog, the positioning of the ads, the font colours and so on. It is, only and only, about the kind of habits you develop as a person who blogs because they want to. None of these habits are the kind you need to be born with. They can be built into your system and as long as you give blogging enough importance, you won’t have any issues in adhering to these simple rules.

Write a Lot

How do you improve your writing skills? You write! The more things you write, the more you realise that there is something that you need to add or remove or edit and so on. The more effort you put into your blog, the more posts you create, the better you will get and the better your blog’s quality will be.

Stop Writing

Writing a lot doesn’t mean that you ramble on for pages. No one has the time or the inclination to read fluff and meaningless lines. Getting to the point as soon as possible, ensuring that your reader’s attention doesn’t waver; giving nothing more than meaningful information; using shorter paragraphs & bullet points, and breaking up longer topics into sub-heading based content – all are practices that can make your work more interesting.

Analyse

You can’t just keep writing about whatever you know, without looking at what the world wants to know. For e.g. in the UK, WordPress experts utilize their traffic-data to find out exactly what kind of articles are being read and what the people are looking for. They know where someone’s entering their website and what’s throwing them out! These are elements that you need to be aware of.

Learn

You cannot, ever, claim to know everything about everything. Even if you are a world-renowned expert on a particular subject, you cannot claim to know everything there is to know about it. The common thought process states that as you keep blogging, you will become something of a pro at it. Systems will come into place and everything will become mechanical. The moment that happens – your blog is finished! The moment you think that you don’t need to improve, learn or change, you will stagnate and kill off your blog’s popularity.

As long as you are very curious and interested in what you are doing, your mind will stay on the job. In the end, blogging isn’t about being consistent and there in top rungs of a search engine. Blogging is about sharing your mind and if you want people to come and read what you’ve shared, then you’d better make it interesting for them.

As a software engineer joining the ranks of one of India’s top-five IT firms, there was nothing special about “Vishy”. He was never run of the mill and the 30,000-odd colleagues of his glamorous sweat-shop never made him feel at home. It took all of eight months for Vishy to quit the big-name and move to a tiny organization with just five people, tonnes of work and loads to learn. Having worked in the UK, with WordPress experts, Vishy developed a passion for reading – on the Internet, his kindle or just a book; and writing is a natural tributary to his passion for the binary.

Hi Vishy,

You nicely spelled out what others should do in order to just get going. I mean we all start at the beginning like everyone else. I think we all wish we were natural writers but a lot of us just aren’t. But I think that you’ll find with blogging, the more you learn, the more you want to share with your readers.

Over time your posts can start getting more attention, of course with a little help in driving traffic to your site. But the entire process is a learning experience and a great resource to introduce people to who you are.

Thanks for sharing.

Writing can also help you discover yourself. When done right, the process can lead you to knowing yourself better – how you think, how you solve problems – and eventually lead you to an understanding of your purpose of living.

Pretty deep, huh? :)
