East-west oriented roads usually use odd numbers, while north-south routes use even numbers. Bypass routes are recognized with an added “a” (alternative) or “n” (new alignment) like “B 12n”.

Other roads like Landesstraße and Staatsstraße are prefixed by each “L”, “S” or “St”. however, they’re not usually seen on direction signs or maps. They usually appear on the kilometre posts on the roadside. Numbers are unique only within one state.
