If you are new to SEO, it would be complicated for you to understand the search engine optimization and also the submission of website to search engines and directories. The question arises here is why do you need to pay attention to these factors? Just because the major source of internet traffic is search engines and directories. They are used to generate the high traffic for your website. To make the process easier to understand, this article states ten easy steps you can take to be prepared for the submission of your website to search engines and web directories.

Develop a professional web site by purchasing your own domain name and the reliable hosting for your site. Another thing you need to focus is to design or buy an attractive and simple template design that suits and relates with objective and theme of your site. If you think that you are not good at this side you can hire a freelance web developer who can resolve this issue amiably and can provide you excellent design for your site.

Proper navigation is very important for the search engines. Map an apparent navigation structure and site map. It helps visitors to search the content on your site easily. Make it easier to navigate and make sure it links to all web pages of your site.

Create original and unique content for your web site you can hire content writer and copy writer to write a unique content for your website through Guru.com or Elance.com.

Before choosing a keyword, search for appropriate keywords. You can use keyword tools to search various high ranked popular and targeted keywords for your site’s content, headlines and Meta tags.

When you have completed the content to finish your website even though you need to upload new content regularly but it is essential to confirm that your site is completed. Do not use “under construction” signs and make sure to remove blank pages from your web site before submission.

Try to verify all the internal and external links on a regular basis to ensure they are working properly, as search engines and directories do not list sites having broken links.

Never hide the privacy policy and the contact information of your site. Do let the visitors, search engines and directories get to be familiar with you and be accessible any time.

Do verify the grammar and spellings of your content, as it looks unprofessional. You could also hire a proofreader to verify the grammatical mistakes and spellings from the above recommended websites in step # 3.

You have to select a tracking system to examine the traffic of your website regularly. If you do not use the tracking system, you would not have an idea to check if the users are visiting your site.

Verify the ranking and link popularity reports of search engine and regularly monitor the results.

Now once you have been through all ten recommended steps, you are ready to submit your site to search engines and directories. It is a time consuming process since you need to assess the standing and ranking of each site, available topics for your web site, how frequently submission is required, necessary information and check whether the submission is free or paid.

Software available on the internet which will assist you during the preparation and submission process while reduce the time you could spend significantly. Prior to purchasing the software make sure the software is search engine friendly; it could easily satisfy your needs and carry out all the required tasks.

Some websites have horrible and awful designs that you may often encountered. Such situation actually makes you to shout. If it is certainly happens so you should never think that you are the only person of suffering this problem. Today a large number of users are using internet and almost every user is fed up with such irritated mistakes of website designers.

It has been more than a decade that the complexity and density of websites is increased. However the technology has covered almost the every part of this world but still users have to face many unwanted mistakes in many websites. Such websites largely lose their visitors, because user always turns to any alternate website which is not only free of aggravate but needs to look nice. Following are the mistakes of the website design that have been extensively done by the designers. Nevertheless few of these mistakes have been personally developed in the website and that are not considered as a mistake, but mostly uses find such mistakes in websites. Here the most top ten mistakes are discussed which are noticed by the visitors as most typical and annoying elements.

1. Message Confusion

The major mistake in website is the initial look of the main page. Whenever users tries to find out any information, for example, if it is a business site and user wants to have answer of some queries about the business, services or products then the website needs to be opened swiftly and should not keep user on long delay. But the complicated and irrelevant information given on the site will definitely loose the patience of the users. It also causes loss of many potential customers.

2. Homepage

Homepage is the main page that is given in many websites. But there is a trend of giving too much heavy flash and loadings before appearing the real content. The unnecessary information is only wastage of time. In today’s busy life no user is bound to wait for the initializing of page or loading material. Therefore it is very necessary to avoid such time taking stuffs because only the quick services holds visitor for a long time.

3. Color Scheme

The sensible colors of any website plays very important role in the beauty and attractiveness of the website. If you like bright or garish colors it doesn’t mean that users will also have same taste of colors. Those visitors who have some eyesight problem will never visit such sort of websites. Thus, before designing your website the proper selection color scheme and combination is must. The soothing colors of website always attracts visitors

4. Simplicity of Navigation

Another annoying element in the website design is Navigation bar. It is mostly criticized by the internet users. Navigation bar should be very clear and prominent, because most of the time users encounter lots of confusion in searching navigation bar. If the websites offers any option of purchasing products than its navigation also must be placed on a clear position.

5. Ease of Content Reading

The most important part of your website is “the content”. People read your content in order to take any particular information content of website must be easy and simple. Paragraphs in content should be in organized way because annoying way of expressing words irritates users. Therefore the proper way of writing paragraphs and using headings, sub-headings, makes your content attractive and professional.

6. Registration and Subscription

People always hesitate to subscribe or to be registered on websites because the privacy and security on internet is not considered as a reliable source. In addition, people are also afraid of getting signup on websites because of receiving unwanted or spam emails. Many website did not give guaranty of privacy so visitors always try to skip from such things.

7. Music and Audio Control

Websites are brought to an upgraded level due to audio and music content. To an extent, this should be notified that how inclined users are toward these activities. To sum up, the users should have a balanced approach on internet. The audio and music should not be started robotically. Sometimes user did not want this sort of entertainment on websites so such stuff can irritate user. If your visitors are allowed to switch on/off music then off course this will fascinate them and they will definitely come to visit your website in their free time.

8. Advertising

Usually it is not considered an awkward thing if someone places some advertising over website. But unmanaged ads will not be appreciable by users. Proper placement with proper designing of advertising will be swiftly viewed by users. For example if ads are placed on right or left side of the design and remaining parts of websites have other usual information then it will boost up the quality of website. But if you neglect this major point then your mistake will stand like an obstruction between website and user.

9. Links

The navigation of websites contains links. And proper management of links is the major key in the website design. Therefore it is very necessary for designer to keep all links with standard fonts and styles. These links should be clear to the visitors. If your links are not clear enough and user spends lots of time in finding them then it would really be a big mistake.

10. Pop-ups

Most of the times pop-ups are not appreciated by the internet users because pop-ups are cause interruption every time when user visits website. More problems begin when website lots its potential customers because no one can bear such annoying stuffs for a long period.

The outstanding and professional websites follows good colors, flexible and elastic use of navigations and prettily described content. If you get rid from all of above mentioned irritated things then no doubt the number of visitors of your website will increase. Let’s suppose if you run an online business then careful presentation and professional look of your website will stand as an attractive platform for countless internet users.
Technology is not just for the young. Nearly 20 million people over the age of 65 are using the Internet, an increase of 55 percent over the last five years. Senior women are outpacing their male counterparts by about six percent in terms of regular Internet usage, although people over the age of 65 still make up less than ten percent of all active Internet users in the world. The numbers still show significant growth for a generation some younger users mistakenly think is not willing to accept or learn to use new technology.

More Seniors Online

A recent YouTube clip illustrates this point. An elderly couple posted their first YouTube video, not knowing that the camera was rolling. The couple fumbled around with settings and snipped at each other throughout the process, as married couples tend to do. The humor factor aside, the scene of an older couple being ushered into the modern age illustrates a rising trend of more seniors embracing technology. Seniors now spend about 58 hours a month online, a spike of 11 percent from 2004 figures. Chuck Schilling of Nielsen’s online division points out that many seniors are engaged in the same activities as other users: email, photo sharing, checking news and weather, checking movie times and social networking.

What Seniors Are Doing Online

This doesn’t mean that grandpa is following the latest goings-on of the Kardashian clan. A closer look at what seniors are doing online shows that most engage in age-appropriate pursuits such as searching for health-relating information, travel deals and keeping up on the latest financial news. Nearly 90 percent of seniors online check their personal email. Like the rest of the population, most seniors head to Google to perform routine searches. According to Nielsen figures, additional activities seniors perform while online after checking email include:

Viewing maps or getting directions

Checking weather

Paying bills

Viewing or posting photos

Checking general or political news

Viewing health-related information

Planning a trip or viewing travel destinations

Searching for recipes or meal preparation ideas

Checking financial or business news

Seniors and Social Media

Betty White may think Facebook is a “huge waste of time,” but a growing number of seniors are beginning to see the advantage of using social networks. One senior, 78-year-old Mary Dysart Quint, admits to spending “way too much time” on Facebook. She added that she likes to “keep track of everybody.” According to findings from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, people over the age of 65 are the fastest-growing population among those joining Facebook. Sixteen percent of seniors now visit at least one social network on a regular basis, up from four percent just a few years ago.

A Connection to Others

Seniors are using Facebook and other forms of technology for the same reason their younger peers are, to reach out to others who share similar interests. Seniors have been slow to embrace the Internet, but those who are using it are noticing the benefits of staying connected. The AARP Facebook page has over 20,000 followers, an increase of 15 percent from 2009. AARP also updated its Website to make it more accessible to social network platforms and interactive forums. Nearly a thousand discussion groups have been created by users since the site made changes. As Ms. Quint observed, “You are never too old to learn something new.”

Navigating the waters of web hosting for the first time can be somewhat overwhelming. The number of web hosting companies alone can make the choice difficult. Couple that with all of the feature options, and you are left with a monumental task.

For the moment, however, we will leave the matters of choosing a hosting company and hosting features to another day, and instead focus on the types of hosting that most web hosts typically offer. Those include shared hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), and dedicated servers.

Shared Hosting

A shared hosting account does just what the name implies. It shares a server with other similar accounts. The most important thing to know about shared hosting is that it does not necessarily equate to hosting for only small sites or to limited functionality. Some shared hosting accounts are quite robust and designed for businesses with high-quality and high-volume websites.

In all cases, however, your website will be one of many on a single server. You will still be able to use your own domain or even several domains, but they will all operate within a single virtual host. When a shared hosting server goes down, all of the sites hosted on it go down as well. In this way, it is somewhat like an apartment building. Every tenant must respect the rules and safety of their neighbors or risk the possibility of causing disruption of service for everyone.

Because of the cooperative benefit and shared loss you can experience with shared hosting, most web hosts will have restrictions in place to make sure all sites function well. These may include access restrictions, memory limitations, and bandwidth caps.

There are two types of shared hosting:

Name-based virtual hosting – Several sites share the same IP address and are distinguished only by their domain names. In most cases, this is sufficient and less expensive.

IP-based virtual hosting – Each site has its own dedicated IP address. The primary reason you might need your own IP address is to use a signed SSL certificate for your domain.

Virtual Private Servers (VPS)

Shared hosting accounts are essentially virtual servers, but they are not private. Because of this, only the system administrator has root access. A VPS allows you to have administrative access to your virtual server, and it operates as though it were a server within itself. Most VPS setups utilize some form of virtualization, allowing you to run a completely unique instance of an operating system within a virtual machine.

Someone who logs into a VPS will use it as though it were a separate server all by itself, and there is no practical way for them to ever see the larger server. Virtual private servers generally cost more than shared hosting accounts even when they do not offer as much disk space, bandwidth, etc. The trade-off is that you get your own IP address and your own independent server environment. In most cases, that is the only reason you would actually need a VPS.

Dedicated Server

A truly independent dedicated server is the only option for having a server all to yourself. Unlike shared hosting or a VPS, a dedicated server is all yours to essentially do with what you please. You have administrative access, full use of the system’s CPU, RAM, and disk space, and as many IP addresses as you can afford.

There are two types of dedicated servers that web hosts commonly offer: managed and unmanaged.

With a managed server, the web host maintains a higher level of responsibility for its upkeep. The degree of management may vary, from simply maintaining updates and software to completely hands-off service, where they control everything on the server according to your instructions. You will likely need this type of server if you expect to have a large, high traffic website but do not have the expertise to run one yourself.

An unmanaged server places the responsibility for upkeep on your shoulders. You are responsible for everything, from security updates to software installation. You have full root access and full control over your server. This type of server is great for those with the experience or IT staff to handle server management.

Making the Choice

Choosing the best hosting services for your needs can be tricky, but once you have a clear vision of what you want to do with your websites, the next step is simply a matter of gaining knowledge about each type. This guide is only the beginning of that knowledge, as there are many aspects of each hosting type that we have not explored and that might differ from one host to another. Learning as much as you can will help you make an educated decision – one that is best for you and your website.

Since you have a lot of different options available to you for SEO of your site but one of the most important methods of generating heavy traffic to your site and to improve its ranking in all major search engines is to have as many active links as you can. This could be a major concern for a web designer in designing a website. Broken links are one of the more challenging things that can occur on any website at any time. These are the empty external web pages or non-active/ existing hyperlinks that are not working properly. When a user clicks on a broken link, it displays an error message on the website and leaves a bad impression on the user. Hence, evaluating your links regularly and removing broken links on a regular basis is an imperative for a web designer. That is why here we decided to discuss some obvious reasons for which you need to avoid broken links in your web design altogether. Here you will see that what broken links can do to a very well designed site and how they can influence its reputation and credibility online.

Offer Hurdles for Site Indexing in Major Search Engines

As mentioned earlier, there are lots of factors that can influence your website ranking in search engine results. Search engine result page displays the results of user search queries for which they use a series of computer programs known as spiders or robots. These spiders perform the task of listing the URLs of websites related to the certain query. This thing helps to index the content of web pages over the internet and this index is used to find out the specific information on the web. But if a spider crawls a website for certain information and finds a broken link, search engine becomes unable to index that website. This thing in turns affects the ranking of your site altogether. If spiders coming from various search engines will find broken links for your site they will not index your site at all.

Reduce the Number of Visitors to Your Website

There are a lot of concerns when we talk about higher ranking in search engines. For instance, traffic generation will have much impact in this regard. You must know that broken links can reduce the number of visitors to your website as well. Suppose if user finds a page that displays an error message of ‘Page Not Found’, what would you expect from him? He will certainly get disappointed and will not be returned again to your site.

Shatter the Reputation of Online Business

Those of you having a professional website or a blog offering different services, products and information to your customers must have determined a goal in your mind. Under all types of circumstances, the central goal of all webmasters is to provide a best user experience, promote their services and products and providing a solution to the customers for all types of related queries. Whenever a user comes across to your website, either way through an external link or through search engine’s result, he comes with certain expectation to resolve his problem or to get required services. So here you need to remember that generating traffic to your site is particularly important but to maintain your professionalism in the eyes of your customers is essential which you need to maintain.

Remember that only a fully functional website with no broken link can ensure your performance and lasting existence on the internet. It is a fact that broken links can damage your online reputation by conveying the negative impression to the user. Therefore you might need to monitor your website regularly to rectify the errors caused by broken links in order to provide a lasting experience to its users and to increase the traffic to your site.

If you want a clean design with no broken link or other related problems which can make your site design really horrible you can consider SEO UK for best website design UK to get best return of your investment.

We have all heard the story about how search engine optimization begins even before the website is created and that it should be an important part of a website’s life as early as possible. To many people, this only implies that they should focus on properly optimizing their code and content once they get around to actually building their website. However, this is no longer the case, particularly in light of the recent algorithm changes made by search engines.

Effective search engine optimization instead now starts even before you start thinking about page names, page titles, loading times, and image names. With the incredible amounts of spam polluting the Internet and search engines subsequently adjusting their algorithms, it is now essential for a website to adhere to key factors in its layout itself to stand a chance of achieving high visibility in organic search. Consequently, search engine optimization needs to be accounted for while you are settling for a website layout.

Avoid huge banners

Huge banners used to be an integral part of the Internet. Websites relied a lot on huge banners in their header as this was too often linked to quality. These banners were often indeed regarded as a quality of the website. The flashier and more beautiful the banner, the most useful you would expect the website to be (although it was not always the case).

Things have completely changed now as you should ultimately avoid the banner because it takes too much space and also greatly increases your page load time. Moreover, search engines now pay attention to how much content is actually automatically visible as soon as the page loads. Obviously, a big banner, however animated it may be, is going to take away eat away at a lot of space you could instead use for content.

Keep your footer simple

The days of information-filled footers are also well behind us. Footers enjoy a great history. These used to be marvelous for placing links to your most important pages, which often inevitably turned out to be pretty much every page of your website. This resulted in excessively stretched footers that nobody were paying attention too and that far too often looked messy.

Your footer should nowadays be kept as simple as possible. Stick to your copyright information and the legal mumbo jumbo. If you really want to have a secondary menu in your footer, it is important that you actually take the time to come with a properly designed layout for the footer instead of just sticking to links stacked next to each other. This effectively makes people actually notice your footer as it will look like a real menu instead of looking bland and extremely generic.

Your content first

Three column layouts with content in the middle column used to be the craze. In some places and niches, they still are. However, they are a bad idea as there is no need to have a left menu consisting only of links and other menus. Stick to a layout where you content is always to the left so that it’s also the first thing everybody sees. With such a layout, you thus increase the chances of your visitors taking an interest in your content and actually checking it out.

If you were to ask any successful bloggers for tips on how to match their achievements, they are likely to tell you to “stay organized.” But what does that even mean? Organization has many facets and can play a role in the way you write, deal with comments, network, research, brainstorm, promote yourself, and read. You may find yourself scheduling time to answer emails and engage others for guest posts. There are several ways to stay organized and avoid wasting time.

Makes Lists
Use lists to stay organized. Make lists of potential future titles, lists of images that you want to use, and lists of contacts that you need to talk to. Do not be afraid of long lists that give you the opportunity to slowly work on. Organize lists by topics, trying not to separate similar ideas, so that you can assess ideas all at once.

Brainstorm Titles Constantly
Keep a list of future titles for blog posts you intend to write about in the future. Keep the titles in a Word document or even a computer notebook problem like Microsoft One Note. Keep the program open constantly and update with future titles anytime you are inspired. If you do use One Note you can make a page for each title to keep notes and images on. This will save you time you would otherwise spend trying to do research and write at the same time.

Pay Attention To Popular Posts
Keep track of all the posts that readers seem to enjoy most. If there is a theme in those popular topics, consider writing a series that expands on the topic or gives extra tips on how to deal with the topic. This saves you time and gives you more content.

Schedule Your Days
Designate one day a week to focus your efforts on specific tasks. For example, choose one specific day each week to research posts. Choose another day to write enough posts to last you the rest of the week. Schedule them to post on their own so that you do not have to worry about posting on days you want to focus on addressing comments, emails, or social networking sites.

Write Everything
Write down every task you intend to complete each day. If you do not want to write in a physical notebook, keep track of the tasks in another way. The point is to have a visual representation of the work you must complete each day. Figure out what works best for you.

Web hosting can be as simple or complicated as the client wants it to be. Ultimately, the options a client selects are related to their immediate Web hosting needs. The technology is there, how it is used will determine how much benefit a hosting service provides.

Assessing Your Needs
A large corporation requires a complex system with multiple forms of software combining to keep things running along with substantial tech support. If a client is just running a blog, single page hosting is sufficient and requires minimal maintenance.

A more complex setup requires more database support and application development platforms such as Java, Ruby on Rails, PHP, ASP.NET and ColdFusion. These platforms give a client the ability to install or write scripts for applications such as content management and forums.

The platforms and applications required for web hosting depend on what tasks you want to accomplish. For example, SSL is recommended for e-commerce.

Hosting Admin Panel
A control panel for Web hosting purposes is provided by the hosting company to allow you to manage all hosted services in one place. Common modules in a host panel include:

Web-based file manager

Access to server logs

Managing databases

Email account configuration

Visitor statistics produced from Web log analysis software

Details of available and used bandwidth and Web space

Some admin panels allow you to apply custom skins and change the appearance of the admin panel to match personal style or the style of a company. Customers can alter settings in the admin panel to suit their needs. The W3C maintains a standard format used for the server log files, but amendments to the information captured and presented in log files can be made.

Typical client additions include request date/time, client IP address, HTTP code, user agent and bytes served. Bandwidth in terms of Web hosting is more accurately reflected as data transfer, meaning the maximum amount of data transfer per month or during a specified period of time. The amount of allowable data transfer can be adjusted, depending on the type of Web hosting a client is using.

The most common adjustment a client makes to the admin panel is to visitor statistics capture via Web log analysis software. Some clients want very detailed statistics, other do not see it as relevant to their needs.

Software and Configuration
Some Web hosts provide very specific services for specific purposes. A file hosting service is only for hosting files. An image hosting service is just for images. The same concept continues for video and blog hosting services. Useful software for Web hosting purposes is directly related to a client’s needs.

A client running a single Web page would use something like iPage.

Justhost.com provides the most flexibility when it comes to the control panel. Bluehost is recommended for advanced Web hosting. However, the tools available with this software can be useful to clients with any level of experience with Web hosting.

Clients who code in ASP tend to like EasyCGI.

VSPLink is recommended for clients with a Website requiring more resources and server configuration capabilities.

If a client has additional needs, software and configuration updates and changes are required. Common software updates include adding shopping cart software, e-commerce software and advanced Windows hosting features. Web host configuration depends on the type of server the Web host is using. For example, the typical configuration for a Linux server would be the LAMP platform, including:

Linux

Apache

MySQL

PHP/Perl/Python

Back-End
Some clients require more flexibility when it comes to back-end. Typical Web hosting services for back-end Websites offer a free domain, unlimited traffic, unlimited space and installation of back-end CMS. Back-end concerning Web hosting usually includes:

Setup of a billing system

Setup of order processing

Setup of a support system

Accounting and record keeping setup

The possibilities when it comes to Web hosting vary greatly depending on the type of hosting used. Free hosting is best for simple tasks such as running one or two Web pages. Cloud-based hosting is the most reliable. However, this type of hosting is characterized by a lack of centralization resulting in less control over where data is located, resulting in possible privacy and data security issues. The way a client accesses and uses Web hosting is directly related to both their immediate and anticipated needs.

Like a spark of brilliance but not a stalk of longevity, there are certain search engine optimization practices that are only going to bring in results for a short period of time. Although you might be tempted to believe differently under the influence of certain advices, blog comments and article submissions are among these strategies. In order to understand why this is happening, we need to take a look at what happens to an article or a blog comment when it is approved.

Why Article Submissions Die Quickly

The truth is that article submission is going to have a positive effect that is noticed really fast once it is plugged in onto the article submission directory. Unfortunately, as time passes, these links are going to start having a lower weight in influencing the search engine ranking placement. When your article is approved, it will show up on the homepage of the article directory. This is relatively fantastic since that page will most likely have a really high page rank. The benefits are numerous since article directories will feature recent articles in various places on the site. Some even show them on every single page, for instance in a special sidebar box.

As soon as the article is approved, you will basically get a link from a page that is linked by directly from a really high PR page, such as a PR as high as 6 or even 7. The problem is that the links to the articles will eventually go down as new articles are going to be approved daily. After around 30 days, it is quite common to notice that the link to your article is around 4 links away from the initial high PR homepage. The value of that link is going to go down because of this and will end up having little worth through the passage of time.

Why Blog Comments Die Quickly

With blog comments, the principle is similar but there are slight differences. However, the problem is that the effect will be the same. When you comment on a blog, there are two things that can happen. The link to your site is going to appear in the comments section of the post and it might also appear in a site-wide section in the sidebar that shows recent comments. It is logical that as new comments appear, the site-wide section is not going to feature your link anymore so the high PR link that was present on the homepage will no longer be there.

When referring to the post, let us say that the blog has a high PR. If you are among the first comment contributors, the link will hold a good value but as new comments appear, other links will start appearing on that page. For every single link that appears, the weight of the link towards your site is going to be suppressed over time.

Can Article Submissions and Blog Comments Really Help?

As you can notice, blog comments and article submissions can help you rank higher but the effects are going to diminish as time passes. You should use these methods but should also keep in mind that effect seen after 30 days is the real effect of these methods.

Jeet loves to find out about how exactly internet and SEO work and runs a small link building company from Mumbai, India.

Are our memorization capacities diminished because we know that anytime we need to access anything, it’s only a click away? Many would argue that yes, Google has essentially become our memory.

Previously, when people wanted to recall something, they had to do a little more work. They had to locate a specific book and page number and read through it. Or, they had to contact someone who did have the information via a phone call, letter or face-to-face meeting. They had to think a lot more about the facts they required, and the facts were easier to remember because they put in all that effort. They would be more likely to commit the fact to their own memory, because if they forgot they’d have to go through the process again to find out.

The New Way

Now, to find out anything, we simply type it in the Google search engine box. Instantly, thousands of potential answers are available to us. We very quickly come up with an answer, and because it was so easy, we often quickly forget the information as soon as it served its purpose for us. We don’t commit the information to memory because we know we can just as easily find it again whenever we need to. Rather than remember the fact itself, we remember where to find it again.

Downsides

While there are many positive aspects of Google, how it affects our memory is one of its downsides. The more we practice remembering things, the better we become at it. If we don’t have to remember anything because of Google, we won’t be as good at recalling something when we do need to. If we’re ever in a situation where we require facts but don’t have access to Google, we may feel very lost and unsure of what to do. Relying solely on Google for our memory can have great consequences if we are ever without it.

Allowing Google to become our memory can also potentially cheapen our thought processes. If we don’t remember simple facts, we will have a much more shallow understanding of concepts. When we lack informational memories, we are prevented from developing deeper thoughts and ideas that could be based on those memories. If we need deeper knowledge, we will only turn to Google again rather than using our own memories to come up with a practical answer.

The information-overload that comes with using Google is also bad for our memories because we’re faced with too many potential sources of answers to our questions. We can’t always focus on the information we need right away because we have to sort through many possibilities. We have to filter out information that could be incorrect or inaccurate, and we’ll potentially read many answers to a question rather than just the one we truly need. We can’t be expected to remember all of that, and we won’t, because it’s unnecessary.

What to Do

If you’re worried because Google has become your memory, you can try to take an active approach to enhancing your memorization capabilities. If you have Google-d a piece of information that you want to remember, do more than just read it and move on. Write the fact down in a notebook. The act of writing it will help you remember, and you’ll have it available to you somewhere other than the Internet. Read it out loud. Refer to it a few times a day until you have memorized it. Also, make it a point to use the information by sharing it with others or expanding upon it with more ideas. If you proactively try to increase the amount of information you remember, you can reclaim your memory back from Google.

If you’re starting a blog, one of the most important parts about it is going to be the web address or domain name. Your domain name is how people are going to find and connect to your site, so you want it to be good. It is what your site will be remembered as, and how people will recommend you to their friends. Picking a good domain name is essential. But how do you do it? There are so many options. Did you know domain names can be up to 67 characters in length? That gives you quite a lot of options. Not to mention all the different suffixes, from .com to .net to .org and other country-specific top level domains. Before you get your blog up and running, you should definitely give a good amount of thought to the domain name that you choose. It will be your personal stake of Internet property, so you want to make it good. Here are some things to consider when choosing your blog’s domain name.

What is the name of your blog?

A good rule of thumb is that your URL should contain the exact name of your blog. If your blog is called The Blog Site, you should try to get a URL that is “theblogsite.com.” Nowadays when people want to visit a website for a company or blog they have heard of, they assume the domain name is the same. Oftentimes, people will simply enter the name of the site they want to visit and put “.com” on the end, hoping to get there right away. If your blog’s URL is different from its title, your potential readers may be confused, or end up on a competitor’s site. Whenever possible, make your blog’s title the domain name. If that URL isn’t available, you may want to come up with some variation of it. If you really want them to match, you can always consider doing the reverse, and naming your blog after you’ve selected your desired domain name.

Are you search engine optimized?

If you are putting a lot of work into your blog, you’re probably going to go to great length to get your site to appear in search results. This will require use of search engine optimization, and you will need to include relevant keywords throughout your site. Your title and domain name should also contain these keywords. Try not to use words unrelated to your topic. A good URL will help bring the most possible readers to your site.

Will people remember it?

You want people to remember your website address, not have a hard time finding it again. Shy away from random combinations of letters that are difficult to remember, even if they are an abbreviation for your blog’s title. Also, avoid using hyphens whenever possible. If people are trying to tell someone your site address or recall it themselves, they will often not say the “hyphen.” When readers are typing your domain name into their browser, they are more likely to make mistakes if it is extremely long. Yes, you can use up to 67 characters, but that is certainly not recommended.

Which suffix to use?

The “.com” suffix is definitely most popular and should be used whenever possible. If you are intent on having your domain name be something specific, but the “.com” version is already taken, you can consider using another extension. Country-specific extensions may be available, but they give the impression of a local site, rather than international, so use with caution. If you do not use “.com” as your extension, make sure you include what you are using whenever you refer to your site. Make your site’s title “The Blog Site.net” so there is no confusion.

Surely if you have done enough internet surfing you have seen these double underlined links. They stick out, obviously because they have a double underline, but they literally pop out as an advertisement that relates to a corresponding word. Infolinks takes an interesting twist on payperclick marketing. These links are meant to do one simple thing; Provide engaged website audiences with advertisements that truly match their interests as they read. This is done with a simple mouse over, that then displays a relevant ad accordingly. Now what you need to know is how it works, Infoclicks features, and if you should be using them.

Infolinks works very simply. First you have to set up an account. This will be all of your information, and will then configure the way that you will be paid. A code will be generated that you will then put into your website, blog, etc. Infolinks claims that you can do this in about a minutes time, and start generating revenue upon your first click. That might be true, but let’s just say for those of us that like to cross our t’s and dot our i’s that it will take around 5 minutes. What the code essentially does is place links within your text, that can be made into an advertisement. For example the word “Ford” may be made into an automobile advertisement, assuming that word is in your text. The words that Infolinks will chose is seemingly sporadic, but it always seems to pick words that individuals may want to click on. On mouse over, a small advertisement will appear, and once the mouse is no longer on focus the ad will disappear. Not a big hassle, easy to set up, and easy to make money. Alright well let’s take a look at some of the features Infolinks has to offer.

We already know that Infolinks makes it easy to incorporate in-text ads with ease. Now you just have to ask yourself what can Infolinks do for me. For starters Infolinks does support WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Blogger. Phew! There is a sigh of relief. For manually coded sites it should also work just fine assuming that your HTML file is properly segmented. One of the best features that Infolinks has to offer is making money, without taking up any additional space for advertisements. Not many other advertisements can do that and maintain the same level of performance. Another great feature is it will not interfere with links that you have manually put on your page. This is good news for SEO services. Infolinks will simply find the most appropriate text to fit with their advertisers that they already have in place. Infolinks also offers the highest revenue share, and guarantees the highest the highest conversion rate for any in text advertising. The double underline, and pop out ads really help with the conversion rate. Everything sounds pretty good, huh?

The truth is, Infolinks can be a great source of revenue for your site. A of right now, they are by far the best in-text advertisements on the Internet. So you are probably wondering why you shouldn’t use them. For the most part I think that Infolinks are great. There are a few reasons why I would not use them. Number one, any link to an external site is going to increase your bounce rate, and with Infolinks you never know exactly where the link is going to pop up. The more links you have with Infolinks, the more likely people are going to leave you page. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, since you get paid per click. However, if you re looking for serious readership, or convincing someone to buy something, they may not stick around long enough to get to that point. Another reason you may consider not using the links is for SEO purposes. This hasn’t really been touched on a whole lot, and the effect that it may have on your site ranking in the SERP’s is not exactly known. The common thought is that, it may not hurt, but it is definitely not going to help. The only other objection that I have for Infolinks is that they can look tacky. If you have a professional site, that isn’t blog related, then a bunch of double underlined text items may appear a little funny, and unprofessional. Only you can decide if Infolinks are right for your website.

Those double underlined, pop out ads are known as Infolinks. They are a lot of in-text advertising that makes it easy for the webmaster, and the advertisers to have a successful relationship. Infolinks have some great features, and could just be your highest revenue earner for your website. There are a few drawbacks like bounce rate, SEO uncertainty, and jus the fact that you have links all over your site – but Infolinks are a fast effective way to start making some extra cash while taking up little space. Infolinks, and more money is just minutes away, if you want it.

Change is the only thing dominating the real physical world that we live in, as well as the virtual world that has become deeply integrated to our real physical world, i.e. the Internet. Ever since its inception, internet has undergone a great deal of change. Starting off as database containing information in black and white, it has evolved into a multifaceted and multilevel virtual world that seems as much alive and abuzz as the physical world we are a part of.

Google Plus Button

Talking of changes, one of the recent changes that would soon be significantly introducing new trends is the introduction of Google Plus button that can be now seen pinned in footer of different posts on various blogs. That is soon going to bring about changes not yet fully anticipated. In this article, we will try to understand what it is in reality and what changes can it bring to blogging in particular and web surfing in general.

What Purposes Can It Serve?

Though there is a lot to be explored and understood about Google Plus button, a few of its purposes that can clearly be observed mighty include:

AS we all know, social media has become driving force of the virtual world. Google, seeing the popularity of effective social media like Facebook, had announced the launch of their social media network named as Google+ to mark its presence on ever emerging social media front. This Google+ button is designed to act like Facebook “like” button, helping people express their liking about a particular piece of information

The bigwigs of Google realized and assessed the powerful impact of Facebook “like” button on viral marketing, so much so that almost all noteworthy SEO services now try to devise strategies that involve its effective use. Therefore, Google needed an effective alternate to Facebook “like” button that could help them find significant grounds in viral marketing area, which came as Google+ button

Experts also speculate that Google + button must have to do something with search engine based results of web pages and also on blog indexing factor

Possible Impacts Of Google + Button On Blogging

Blogging has definitely emerged as one of the most effective ways of communicating and interacting with large groups of people. Now, Google is wise enough to devise strategies and tools that involve the impact of blogging and other web based social activities on worth of particular information or a particular web page.

According to Google Webmaster, Google is eyeing Google plus button as a tool that has much more to do as far as affecting the search results, much more than Facebook “like” button ever did. In fact, they are taking it as a ranking signal that can affect search results of a particular web page. Google would soon be integrating Google plus button with every blog which would allow users to express their liking about a particular blog. This, according to Google Webmaster, would make search results much more personal, quality oriented, relevant, and interesting.

This would definitely introduce significant and much more positive changes as compared to conventional link building tactics and practices. One way or the other, Google’s role in evolution of internet cannot be sidelined, so would be wrong to underestimate the impact of Google plus button on future of blogging and other search rankings.

Most of us have heard the saying, “let the internet work for you while you sleep.” And naturally, most, if not all, found that very hard to believe. How can the internet work miracles for you even when you’re not doing a single thing. This saying has been used and abused a couple of times, and a number of individuals have become misled by this saying. So if the internet can really work for you while you sleep, how does it do so? And is it really that effective?

It is in the generation of fresh and helpful content that take advantage of the internet. Even when you’re away from your desk, the customers of your small business can still view your write-ups and, through them, be convinced to purchase from you. Here are a few tips for creating content that is sure to work:

1. Answer the hard-hitting questions. You might have to seek the help of your internal team for this since they are the ones who are loaded with all the content ideas. Ask your sales attendants what questions they hear most of the time from your customers. Or what issues your customers most frequently have with certain goods and/or services that you peddle. And then start writing an article which aims to provide a comprehensive and satisfactory answer to your customer-generated questions.

2. Discuss about cost. Although it might be uncomfortable for you to write something which involves the cost of your goods and/or services, your customers are all interested to know about this particular thing so why not break the ice and start talking about it. Besides, why should you be afraid to talk about the cost of your goods or services if you believe that your rates are warranted to begin with? Discussing costs will allow your prospects to know what to expect before they get around to visiting your store.

3. Explain your side of the story. It is normal in business to receive negative publicity, especially from competitors, from time to time. One way to combat these hearsays, keep your customers and prospects from turning to your competitors, and set the record straight is to create articles which tackle these negative issues. Talk about your side of the story. Don’t go overboard or emotional though. Keep things on a rational and professional level, and you’ll get the respect of your customers and prospects

When looking for a new niche to enter it is wise to spend as much time as you need to ensure you’re making the right choice. Spending time now fully researching any potential new market can mean you can enter it in the confidence of knowing it will be easier for your site to rank, you will have better idea of how profitable it can be and it might just turn out to be something that you enjoy writing about. It is never easy to find the perfect niche, but they’re still out there and new ones spring up daily.

Here are 5 ways to find new and exciting niches:

Your passions

Quite often your niche has already found you; it can be your interests hobbies and passions. Quite often when you start to research a niche that you are interested in you’ll find it too tough for you to enter, but don’t give up on it just yet. Keep researching and you might just find a corner of that niche that is relatively untapped. Let’s say you’re interested in gardening but you soon realize that the gardening niche is saturated, why not look at other sub niches like hydroponic gardening, indoor gardening or even window box gardening. Once you begin to research the sub niches you may be surprised at what you find.

News, trends and hot topics

Keeping an eye on the news and the latest trends can be a good way to find a new niche. Let’s say you are interested in tech and gadgets and you hear through one of the many news sites that Apple are releasing a new product to the market. If you are ahead of the game you may be able to register an exact match domain. The combination of an exact match domain, decent content and a new niche uncompetitive niche should result in decent rankings and hopefully a steady stream of revenue.

Magazines

Take a look at magazines.com or the racks of magazines available in your local newsagents and you will soon see that there is a host of magazines dedicated to specific hobbies and interests. You may find a dozen different magazines about gardening, but are there any that cater to a specific section of gardening? Or is there a common gardening topic present in each of the magazines and could you turn any of these topics into a site?

Site Auctions

Taking the time to flick through auction sites like Flippa can uncover some great new niches, but the best thing about this site is the level of information available for each of the sites listed. Each auction will list important details about that site, the traffic and revenue it receives and some even list the keywords they target. With research Flippa can take a lot of the guess work out of the potential held in a niche.

Surfing

There are thousands of profitable niches and new ones open daily, so whenever you are just surfing remember to keep a note of what people are talking about and what seems like a hot topic and you may just find a new niche to enter.

If you want to start a site about your hobbies and interests and are not particularly bothered about how much money it makes then start writing and see where things end up. If on the other hand you are looking at the bottom line and how much you can make from a website then you will need to find a niche that is not only profitable but one that will allow you to rank without having to spend countless hours writing content and building links. So spending time now to properly research will help you find a niche where you can do that.

Any site owner with an interest in building their brand will be looking to market their content in a manner that’s as cost effective as possible. Outreach via email is an obvious technique, but it the days where open rates are decreasing due to spam this is becoming a more and more difficult way of driving engagement. Furthermore, creating traffic is one thing, but how do you ensure that this translates into better rankings on the Search Engine Result Pages?

Building Contacts

Depending on the type of site you’re looking to market, your target audience for an email outreach may come from an existing customer base. For this example, however, we’re going to assume that your contact list is empty and walk through the entire process of finding, filtering, and getting in touch with potential link targets.

So, let’s assume that we’re a site selling dog collars and are looking to target site owners with content dedicated to man’s best friend. We start by doing a quick list of the type of sites we could potentially get in touch with:

Dog Breeders

Charities

Dog Bloggers

‘Mom’ bloggers with pets

These are the ‘obvious’ choices, with dog bloggers and breeders being the easiest to find and target (simply because our site is directly linked to theirs). The next step is to find as many of these sites as possible, along with listing important details about them. This will include things like:

Site Name

URL

Email Address

Contact Form (if no email)

First Name

Last Name

Twitter Handle

Facebook Page

An important part of this research is to build a ‘custom sentence’ for each site. This is just a few words relating specifically to the content which will help make your email sound like you’ve written it by hand and not automated it (as will be explained later). This needs some pre-planning as to the wording of your email and is part of the trust game. Keep things simple here, and make sure each sentence is written in the same tense / tone. An example would be:

“I really liked your post about keeping your dog cool in summer – it’s been sweltering here lately so I used your tip about keeping a bottle of water and a bowl in the car when we went to the woods yesterday.”

There’s no quick way to go about finding these sites, although directories will help, but if you have a list of clever Google queries (such as inpostauthor:guest +”dog blog”) and follow links pages / blog rolls the process can be sped up quite effectively. Also, it’s worth hiring a virtual assistant for this type of task (using a service like elance) as the cash outlay is likely to be fairly low.

An example spreadsheet for this can be found here.

The Trust Game

Before formally introducing yourself to someone it’s a great idea to plant a seed of familiarity. I like to call this the trust game, which sounds more sinister than it actually is – essentially all you’re doing is introducing yourself via social media without formally saying hello.

So, once you have your list of sites, hit the ‘like’ button on each Facebook page and follow each of the Twitter accounts. Ideally you’ll start doing this about 3 weeks before sending out your introduction email and in the meantime will be retweeting and commenting on content that the site owner is posting. If you happen to start up a conversation make sure to keep a note of this in your spreadsheet so that when the time comes to start sending out your emails you can cross your new friend off the list.

From a technical point of view this is a hugely effective way of increasing response and open rates but I’ve personally found that making friends and acquaintances this way is a great long-term solution. Although the aim is to build links, I take the view that not everything is purely business – making new friends, even if it’s just via a tweet or two, can be far more beneficial than an email campaign ever will be.

Your Offer

Before even starting to build your email campaign you need to work out what you’re offering. Site owners won’t always link back to you just because you asked them to, so having a compelling argument is really important here. Whether it’s your latest infographic, some research about canine habits, or a blog post featuring the latest and greatest dog gadgets I’ve always found that having some great content that the site owner could feature is the way to go.

“We’ve just released a new infographic about the most popular dog breeds around the world. This took us a huge amount of time to research but has been well worth it. Would you mind taking a look and, if you like what we’ve done, featuring us on your blog? Also, any feedback would be fantastic – I’m new to this so looking for any help I can get.”

I have used this technique for a personal project, Pet365, which is a retail site offering collars, leads and beds for dogs. A tip for those of you who are creating infographics is to include the embed code on the page you’re pushing people too with an ‘onclick=”this.select()”‘ tag applied to the text box. This makes it quicker and easier for people to copy / paste the HTML that you decide on, and so increases the chances that you’ll get the anchor text you’re looking for.

Building your Email

Before sending your email you need to choose how to go about it. Using a hosted service like MailChimp is the best way to go about things if you don’t want to be worrying about things like Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records. If, however, you’re more technically minded, make sure to have all the proper DNS entries, sign up to bulk email programs, and generally do your housekeeping before hitting the ‘send’ button.

The most important thing is that you use a service which allows you to automatically send and analyse the results of your campaign. With all of the data you have on each site you should be able to build a template based on the information in your spreadsheet. Including their first name at the top of your mail, adding the custom sentence, and making everything sound fairly informal will increase your chances of getting a response.

A/B Testing

Everything about an email will affect the open and response rates. From the time of day you send it to the subject line and body content. A/B testing is the method by which you create more than one version of an email, send it to a number of contacts, and compare the results. This is an iterative process that you need to be doing constantly so don’t be afraid to play around with your template to see what works.

As a general rule, the subject line is the most important thing. ‘Link Request’ probably isn’t the best thing to start with so try ‘Information about Dogs’. Something relevant. Something that raises a question and would make you want to read more.

The Future

This is a hugely lengthy and complex subject, but everything above should give you a quick overview for the process of automating an outreach campaign via email. Once you’ve run your first one there’ll be extra data and information that you can use. Be sure to monitor where your site traffic is coming from – chances are that as bloggers talk about your site there’ll be others who pick up your story and run with it.

Well designed web sites have an organized hierarchy. Everything is in hierarchical order .when you have type faces of different sizes, then you must set according to a line and according to the design of web page.

Use Sans-Serif- Whenever Possible

Sans-Serif is one of the best options to be placed on the screen. If you have to write a lot of content, then this font provides the best option. Verdana is also used a lot in many web pages designs and it is a great option that is displayed on your computer and it looks smart on the web pages.

Leading

It is the space between two lines. When you are writing long lines then you need extra space..If you are using above mentioned two fonts then use bold face and add more leading. This will help to make your content more clear. If the effects of your page are dark, then add more leading. Make sure you put an appropriate height and weight, so that the lines do not collide between each other.

One thing should be taken care of, that in all browsers it should look the same. Some browsers put a little leading themselves as well.

Headings

There are some interesting elements regarding headings. When the heading is large, its font can be more interesting. If the headings are small, then try to keep them simple. Color effects, fonts and styles of the heading put a lot of effect on the web page. Your headings and your tags are so important and they play an important part in over all look of your web page. There are many software’s available these days that can help you enhancing your typing.

Typography is a visual art since centuries. Previously it has many forms that include calligraphy and writing on walls and skins. These days it is used in different scenarios, which includes web designing as well. In web designing, typography plays a vital role. It can trigger your emotions; can be more meaningful, if it is illustrated carefully. It can effect your buying decisions. The way words are written, put an image on visitor’s mind and he/ she perceives something from the way it is written on the web page, because these are the words talking to your customers.

Leads and customers gained through web marketing efforts often signal their success. However, underlying metrics determine the efficiency at which a campaign generates results, meaning that inefficiencies could taint even the most successful websites, leaving money on the table.

While monitoring conversion rates, marketers must never overlook other important website measurements while calculating success. To boost efficiency and conversion rates, web marketers should monitor the 4 key metrics listed here. When they do, they can make important changes that will accelerate their success.

Bounce rate

A bounce occurs when visitors come to a website or a web page and leave right away. This signifies potential problems because the content on the page fails to entice visitors to visit other pages or perform desired actions. High bounce rates represent a tremendous opportunity to increase visitor conversions, so marketers should try new page designs and content that compels them to stay.

Referrers

Web servers keep track of where visitors originate. This information provides important clues that enable marketers to tweak their content for a specific audience. Visitors coming from Facebook and Twitter help gauge the effectiveness of social marketing, while visitors coming from other websites provide insights into the interests and demographics of visitors.

Referrer lists also help track the effectiveness of paid advertisements. By understanding the traffic sources for a particular website, marketers can precisely target their message for specific types of visitors.

404 Errors

When visitors click links from search engines and other sites and receive a 404, File Not Found error, marketers lose the opportunity to convert those visitors into sales or leads. Web server logs keep track of server errors, but this important information often gets lost or ignored. Meanwhile, visitors who could become paying customers see 404 pages that notify them of the absence of the page they tried to view.

Webmasters should periodically review the server error logs to route visitor streams away from missing pages to lucrative parts of the site.

Keywords

Most online marketing programs emphasize choosing relevant keywords for search engine optimization. An important metric that coincides with those efforts is the server keyword report. Servers record the keywords visitors used to search for a site, giving marketers valuable information about keywords that get results. By optimizing web pages to favor working keywords, marketers have a certain way to boost their overall results.

Use these important website metrics to detect website problems, identify inefficiencies and boost your bottom line. Web servers already have this information available, so putting it use is up to you.

Eric Wyatt writes on internet marketing and social media. He particularly focuses on conversion rate optimization and landing page design.

Nowadays everyone prefers to go for Internet Marketing, but in this race of promoting their business many of the successful businessmen often forget to consider about few tough issues. Most of them forget to decide about their goals, and also how are they planning to meet their goals.

Internet can certainly be a very powerful tool which can bring you to the level of any bigger companies. However, the bigger companies have more money power to pay for their advertising. Hence few things are to be considered when you try to analyze the strategy for Internet Marketing.

Internet Marketing – Advantages:

In this kind of marketing your website which is a storehouse, where all your goods are available is open for 24 hours a day and 7 days in a week.

Also your market is not just limited within the boundary of your city or country, as you can find customers from anywhere in the world.

The cost involved in spreading your information on your product is almost nothing. Emailing to any of your overseas prospects is much cheaper than sending letters.

You can also update the information of product or service almost instantly with the help of email. Those who visit your website may get ready information about your product or services.

If you have announced a sale then by just opening their email your customer can shop for the item.

In case you are supplying certain written information e.g. online magazine, article or some e- book then it is possible to deliver the item directly instead of using any courier service.

Internet Marketing – Disadvantages:

It is not absolutely free as you need to consider the cost of necessary hardware and software, website design and also their regular maintenance, distribution cost through online and your time to execute these services.

Presently only 50 per cent of people shop online and the number are expected to grow, but this means you are getting in touch with only 2 out of 3 of your prospects.

People still use the internet for sourcing information only. Most of the visitors of your website will prefer to buy the product in person. Majority of customers will like to have live discussion before buying. If you are a small businessman and located at remote place, then people may not prefer to deal with you.

You have to regularly update the information in your website otherwise your visitors will read the outdated information.

You cannot replace the old way of customer service so easily. Most of the internet marketers do not have any organized customer service or way to respond customers complain. With the result most of the prospects will label you as poor service provider, before they really contact you. The navigation of many websites is also too poor with the result the prospects cannot find what you can deliver.

Besides all these, in Internet Marketing many other issues are also to be considered. For instance security of your website is also very important. Your customer will not prefer to share their credit card information even in case they are interested to buy your product.

Also there are plenty of competitions in the internet for your product. As your customers get the information about your website, they must have already found out dozen more websites of similar products. Until or unless what they are searching for is exactly matching with your product, they will look for some other website.

Nowadays many website visitors look for free gifts. You must therefore consider something to offer free of cost, which can be of the customer’s interest and also does not cost you much. All these disadvantages can be taken care of only if you look at this marketing in the perspective of customers, but not as purely an internet marketer.

Once the aim of a search engine was to collect and index all the webpages in the world and then present them to a user based on relevance, or more specifically, a combination of the pages most relevant to the search terms and also voted best by the Internet community.

This system worked very well for a long time. However, over time more websites across more geographic regions has caused the system to fail. So search has evolved. We now have local search, personalised search and many search filters than can be applied. Search is moving on, but what is next? What should be next?

We have heard news today that Bing is partnering with Baidu, the Chinese search engine. China is famous for its own form of personalise search experience, also known as censorship.

Search is becoming more personalised on all levels with specific results based on user interests, user search history, a users friends interests (social search in on the rise) and a users location. This does provide a richer search experience for most people and helps to ensure that a person finds the best quality results.

In fact, quality is the latest buzz word in search. Google rolled out a new search engine ranking factor earlier this year, code named Google Panda. This new ranking factor analyses website quality and adjusts its positions in the search engines accordingly. It has received a mixed reception really. Many people are praising the fact that the quality of the results has improved while others are complaining that their old favorite websites seems to have declined in the search engines.

The search engines play a massive role in the Internet today. Once they were simply a convenient way to find new information, but now people rely solely on search engines. However, this is changing. Social media is fast becoming more important. As people spend more time on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter all their new website links are coming from friends and contacts. These people are searching Google less as their friends are providing them with the information they need.

This is partly why Google is now incorporating social search into the search results. As well as seeing the results ranked by Google based on quality and popularity they also show the results that your friends and contacts like.

This really does mark a great change in the way websites will be provided to us in the future. The current system is now outdated. Google still uses PageRank as a major ranking factor. This system counts the number of links that point to a webpage to help determine its popularity. However, this means simply that webmasters are now in control of the search results and not Google. This is of course why Google is working hard at changing this, which includes implementing its own social voting button and its own social networking site.

Google has been doing all it can this year in order to reduce the amount of spam pages in it’s index, a figure that has been steadily growing for the past 5 years or so. Some serious changes to the magical Google algorithm this year, with the ‘Panda’ update, helped this by hitting spam sites and unscrupulous people who were reposting others content. However, it also caused a lot of problems for them because the rules they used also devalued some high profile blogs and non-spam sites. They pushed through and resolved the problems, and many people now agree that the quality of Google results have benefited.

So Matt Cutts, head of Google web spam has had a busy year so far, and they’ve taken another big step recently with the removal of all domains ending in co.cc. Unlike many other top level domains like .co.nz, .co.au, co.uk and others, many of the .co.cc domains are not official. The authorised domains like the ones mentioned above relate to country specific domains, whereas co.cc is also a privately owned TLD (top level domain). It is owned by a Korean company, known as a freehost, and they are the ones who have been offering the domains. The official TLD for this address is the Keeling Cocos Islands, but Google has made sure that all sites hosted on this official domain have been unaffected.

Google exercised their right to block the entire domain because of the amount of spam sites that were reported coming from these domains, and this is probably due to the price that they were offered at. They could be purchased for around 7c each, or larger packages of 15,000 for only $1000. The amount of virus and phishing attacks that came from this TLD also more than doubled any other domain, so that was another big factor in the banning.

This is a trend that many fear is set to continue, especially with the recent news from ICANN that any top level domain will now be available for the right price, .coke or .pepsi for example. Obviously, these prices are prohibitively expensive, but with the potential benefits for scammers and spammers being so high it does make an attractive target. As the internet is ever expanding, and more people do more activities online, the chances of cyber crime of all sorts inevitably increases. Google may be seen by some as monopolistic and controlling, but they also have vast resources that they put into keeping their own index relatively spam free, and for me that can only be a good thing.

Google launched Prizes.org during the July 4th holiday weekend in a Beta format. The site appears to be a crowd-sourcing, social networking-type site that offers actual cash prizes for the top answers to questions posed by other users. Fun or fail?

This is only the latest in Google’s recent glut of products and services. Prizes.org isn’t a strongly Google-branded site like many others, but it does have Google’s standard privacy agreement, and the site is operated by a Google company named Slide, which the search engine monolith purchased in August of 2010.

Prizes.org users must log in via their Twitter or Facebook accounts, which is actually a bit surprising, considering that Google’s other new social networking brainchild, Google+, isn’t offered as a login option, or even Google accounts, which aren’t listed as possible to link up to Prizes.org. Once logged on, users can participate in this solution-based approach to competitive social gaming. Users are able to create their own contests, where other users are able to solve the contest’s problems or give advice to questions. Contest creators can even post cash as an incentive for the winning participant. Once logged on, you can create your own profile, including picture, website, interests, and more, as well as a description of your contest activity, such as how many contests you have created and entered, as well as how many votes you have cast and received.

This new site is somewhat of a combination of Quora’s Q-and-A approach and Craigslist’s “gigs” posting board. The competitions are timed and cash prize amounts vary. Some examples of contests include a request for the “Best Soul Tunes” mix tape, which has a lifespan of eight days and a payout of $10. Others include $50 for the best tattoo design—even a $100 contest for the top poem about…sea otters. Top-paying current contests are a “write me a business plan” contest for a whopping $8000 payout and a $1000 logo-design contest. Most, however, are simple and sweet: design my new living room, help me plot out my vacation itinerary, give my dad a makeover. You can see the other users’ responses and how many votes they have received, allowing you to gauge what seems to be the most “popular.” Visitors then are able to vote for the submissions during the contest’s time limit, awarding the prize once the time is up and the votes are tallied.

Google bought Slide for $182 million in 2010; it is a social gaming startup that has published a few iPhone apps, such as Disco, a group-texting application. Slide’s founder was Max Levchin, of PayPal fame, and it is administered as a stand-alone unit within the Google infrastructure. This autonomy may explain the lack of a strong Google presence on Prizes.org.

Google has put out other question/answer services, which is another possible reason for why they didn’t brand Prizes.org so strongly. The less-than-overwhelming Google Answers service was nixed after four years in 2006. Still, Prizes.com does seem to offer a lot more actual potential than Google Answers ever did, as well as being a more user-friendly scenario—although it is also a potential spammer and troll haven, too.
