When you start a business, perhaps a handful of people will know of your services. Then you do good work, and more people know about you. The word-of-mouth spreads and the networks grow.

But who forms these networks?
Who is your target audience?
How do you reach them?
How do you strengthen your bonds with all of them?
And last but not the least, how do you reinvent your business?

The answers to the above questions and much more, lies in the rapid growth and popularity of social networking sites like Facebook. With the platforms they are offering, they are certainly changing the way we look at business. In this segment, we will leave aside all other websites and only concentrate on facebook; as the leader in terms of active users. Facebook reports a user base of 8 million profiles or actual, real people – actively using it to share ideas, plans and perspectives.

In simple words, take a look at this:
Conventional advertising would probably adopt media like television, radio or newspapers. To go a step further, big brands would have brand ambassadors. Hollywood stars, sports stars or musicians are conventionally seen as the face of the brand.

But, THIS is changing with facebook.

Here the common man is the brand ambassador. He shares his thoughts with his friends and has genuine conversations. In other words, YOUR customer or possible customer is ultimately the face of your brand.

Why this is important is because, your buyer has the power to influence. He lives his own life in his own circle, but he buys your services or products – and hence, your connection with him not only becomes important but also mandatory.

This is where facebook enters as the “game changer”.

If you step out of your office, you will notice people on the street. Majority of them are facebook users. Every day when they go home or before they come to work, they put up status messages about things that are important to them, many of them follow events on their profile and like pages that interest them; interact with friends and talk about their activities. Many don’t really participate, but hang around and choose from the options they have. These people are your buyers.

It is this potential that facebook is capitalizing on, with facebook advertising and possibly, you should too!

It works two ways: In offering your service as an advertisement on facebook, facebook inc. is serving its users better. By providing them deals about things that may be of relevance to their life, the user or the buyer is satisfied; while the client, who has placed the advertisement, does better business.

So, while not compromising on their policies, facebook has gone to become a “profitable” organization rather than just one that “connects” people.

They bring your target group to you for each of your campaigns.

Take a look at the chart here.

This data is furnished to Facebook by its users, certainly under privacy norms. Now, Facebook uses the data and groups its users into categories like different age groups. When specific advertiser is interested in a specific age group of people, then facebook helps them to reach out to exactly the correct target audience.

One most note here, that this isn’t breach of trust because these user profiles are not being traded out. The engineering at facebook helps reach the relevant data to the right people, while securing the information.

Suppose an advertiser wants to promote his investment banking proposals, he would prefer to look at working men and women; possibly in the age group 26-34 years and 35-45 years. As seen in the chart, this would mean people in the green and purple region. The advertising can further be region specific, locality specific, profession specific etc.

The world of advertising is changing with these advancements.

However, while this sure seems to be “smart” work, there are challenges that need to be overcome. Facebook, also being just another website, is ultimately prone to internet viruses, hackers and attacks. In recent reports, as recent as January 2012, facebook has been found to be infected by a virus which has stolen data from almost 45 thousand User profiles. Majority of these profiles belonged to France and United Kingdom.

Therefore the question here is, how safe is your data on facebook? And more so, how authentic is your advertising? As long as the ROI isn’t bad, you can plunge in and take the risk – and meanwhile, facebook will have to get its engineers to pass the ‘security’ check!

Social media websites are just beaming with people. For that reason, it would seem only natural for marketers to take advantage of these social networks’ popularity through paid advertising. The three most used platforms namely Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn cater to different demographics but all of them are on to one thing: creating innovative solutions for targeted advertising. It is crucial for a small business to come up with specific goals prior to tapping any of these social media sites.

Facebook

Of the three social networks mentioned, Facebook ads are far more advanced and its self-serve interface is very reminiscent of the early Google Adwords platform. The best thing about Facebook ads is that they are available to business of different scales. Facebook ads have become most popular among small businesses which often have very limited budgets.

The reason for why prices of clicks and impressions on Facebook are significantly lower than compared to Google Adwords and other mature channels is because of Facebook’s still developing platform. So although entrepreneurs won’t have to shell out more money for Facebook ads, Google Adwords still holds the edge with its more properly utilized platform.

Facebook has basically mastered targeted advertising. With the help of users’ profile information, Facebook is able to match individuals with ads that they are likely to be interested in. Entrepreneurs can reach out to people who are aged 55-65 or to 24-40 year-old women or to people who enjoy jazz music through Facebook’s targeting capability.

LinkedIn

Because LinkedIn is a community composed of businesses and professionals, B2B industries will fare more by utilizing LinkedIn ads. LinkedIn makes use the professional information on its members’ profiles for targeted advertisements. LinkedIn’s platform allows businesses to interact only with individuals that hold specific qualifications or titles through advertisements. For instance, you can have your ads seen only be people who hold the title of director of marketing. Because LinkedIn is becoming increasingly popular, do not be surprised if there is a sudden price increase of the cost of advertising.

Twitter

Although a lot of marketers have already made use of Twitter to promote businesses, this social network’s advertising platform is the most underdeveloped of the three websites. Twitter’s advertising solution is quite prohibitive as it only caters to large brands through its “Sponsored Tweets”. What basically happens is that advertisers’ tweets show up at the top of the feeds for increased visibility. However, it’s only a matter of time before Twitter will begin offering advertising solutions for smaller businesses.

This is a guest article by Ryan Farrell.

The business model behind the pay per click management enterprise is essentially advertisers pay host sites money every time someone clicks on an ad. For most ppc management firms, the idea is to have as many possible click-throughs, to enable the aggregate of income. Just as with any media related outlet, advertisers create ads that they imagine will generate the largest amount of click-throughs. With successful ppc management firms, the number of these click-throughs can number in the millions, with a small percentage of each adding to the management company’s income ledger.

The key is to generate content that the users, or viewers or audience, are able to engage and interact with. Much of the content, be it ads or banners of some kind, is often flashy and attractive to the particular web-site visitor’s eyes. This attraction is called “gluing the eyeballs,” because it literally sticks the content to the viewer’s eyeballs. Much of the pay per click advertisements from the beginning of the Internet have been somewhat glitzy. Moving images and lighted text were essential to the online advertising, performance marketing, and Internet marketing businesses that have become ubiquitous in and around the Internet.

Each time a web-site visitor discovers an advertisement they like enough to click on, the ad generates the code necessary to send the web-site visitor to a corresponding landing page. This process is called a “click through,” and is much like the turnstile fee at any event – each entrance is recorded and accounted for. The domain for a particular ad, usually part of a search engine marketing or search engine optimization campaign, can generate specific content based on the web-site viewer’s known web identity. Top-ranked websites don’t necessarily have to correspond with successful ppc management campaigns, but the majority of successful campaigns do involve some ppc schedules or associated content management. Proper planning generates success online.

PPC, or pay per click, online advertising and its associated management firms need to be keen to the trends in actuarial science and web programming and analytics. Companies like Salesforce.com and Google.com are advancing the needle with engagement and interaction between client and customers. The components most-overlooked, but quite essential, is the quality of web-site ads and associated content. Usually provided by SEO content writers, the richness or eyeball glue of an ad can generate click-through rates. Revenue on the web is comes from the creativity of a website or ad campaign.

This is a guest article by George Peterson.

It doesn’t matter if you have the best product in the world, or if you have the greatest service in the world. If people don’t know about it, then people won’t get it, and then it’s useless. You need to get the word out there or else your product is useless.

Media advertising is the best way of getting your product and service out there. With an effective ad campaign, you won’t need to look for clients. You’re clients will come to you. If you know how to attract their attention and curiosity, how to tickle their fancy, then you’ll have a steady stream of clients and customers.

So How Do You Do It?

The best way is to mix up your ad campaigns. Don’t just rely on one arm of media advertising. There are different ways for you to get an effective ad campaign. Try and mix up your Television ads with print ads and online ads.

Online ads are the cheapest. Compared to the prices of traditional media advertising arms, online ads are close to free. Online media advertising provides you a lot of freedom. There are no limits to the length of your online commercials. There have been online commercials that are 10 minutes long. There have been some that are as long as a short film. You also have freedom regarding the content of your ads. Since the internet enjoys more freedom than traditional media and doesn’t have as much restrictions, you are free to put whatever you want (so long as it’s in good taste). Another benefit of online advertising is that it reaches the most people compared to all other media arms. Once online, the ad can reach anyone anywhere, so long as they have an internet connection. The problem with online ads is that it doesn’t have the same credibility as traditional media.

The most common approach is going the TV route. Television ads are, arguably, the most popular and will reach more people compared to other traditional media advertising arms. However, out of all of them, TV advertising is the most expensive. The prices of TV media advertising take a lot out of your budget.

The other two are Radio and Print. Radio, compared to the other media advertising arms, is deemed to be most creative, since it is limited to hearing. You need to have a catchy and creative ad to be effective with radio.

The last is Print. Print ads refer mostly to ads found in newspapers, journals and magazines. Companies prefer print ads because of the amount of information you can include. You can put a lot of information regarding your company, your product, and your service in print ads.

Again, it’s best that you consider mixing up your ad options. Don’t stick to one arm. Use two, or if it’s possible and realistic for you, use all of them. You’re bound to reach more people if you use all possible areas available to you.

This is a guest post by Neil Jones.

I am completely bewildered by how much misinformation is being spread with regard to simple terms associated with Google’s keyword tool (GKW). I was browsing a popular internet marketing forum the other day and a question was asked related to certain of the search categories within the tool. The replies were appalling to say the least, and I was shocked at what replies people conjure up. My advice to you is to not believe everything you read online. It is sometimes best to do your own research instead of depending on others for factual information.

Now that my rant is over, I will like to define the basic terms used within the keyword tool:

From the image above you will notice certain labels from A-G that are attached to specific terms within the tool. I am limiting this article to explaining these terms only as I feel they are the most important, and they are in an area that is not fully understood by some people on forums.

A: Broad Match:

This reflects search terms that contain any word from the root key phrase in any order. For example: if I use the term “black hat”, a broad match will include any term that contains the word “black” or the term “hat” or any phrase that has both terms within it.

Examples of broad matches: cheap black paint, buy a hat, black suede hat

From the description above you will be able to gather why this match type is called a broad match. The broad match search volume isn’t a statistic that should be used to determine the number of monthly searches for a root keyword because it contains many unrelated phrases and terms

B: Exact Match

The exact match reflects the volume for a search term that is verbatim. So, if I search for the term “black hat” again, the exact match will be “black hat” without any inclusions or separations. This is the most relevant data with regard to volume for a specific keyword you are searching for, and you should use this figure when gauging the approximate monthly search volume for a specific keyword.

C: Phrase Match

The phrase match is any term that contains the exact phrase within it. For instance: if I search for “black hat”, any words before or after that term will be regarded as a phrase match.

Examples of phrase match terms: best black hat, black hat shops, where to buy a black hat

D: Competition

Competition reflects the competitiveness related to the number of people bidding on a specific keyword for Adwords advertising. A higher competition means there are more advertisers bidding a keyword and this will heighten the average cost-per-click.

It is important to emphasize that this data is not reflective of the competitiveness of a keyword in the organic results. For some reason many people possess the false belief that this is so. Competition analysis in the organic results is a separate endeavour and Google does not provide this type of data.

E: Global Monthly Searches

This is fairly straightforward as it reflects the global monthly search volume for a specific keyword.

F: Local Monthly Searches

This data reflects the number of local monthly searches for a specific keyword. From the image above I have chosen the United Kingdom as a location. So, the data in this field is relevant to the UK.

G: Estimated Average CPC (cost-per-click)

This field represents the average amount that an Adwords advertiser will pay for each click generated from an ad that is displayed for a specific keyword.

The above mentioned definitions are just a basic summary of the most utilized data sources. Understanding this data is pivotal when engaging in keyword research since your research is the point of departure when embarking in any Search Engine Marketing campaign. Google provides detailed tutorials on every aspect related to the keyword tool and I will advise you to study those tutorials as it will definitely impart the essential knowledge that is required by every internet marketer.

This is a guest post by Neil Jones.

Alright class, today we will be discussing the basic principles of what search engine marketing is. It seems there are contradictory schools of thought with regard to the theory of Search Engine Marketing (SEM), and my goal is to clarify any grey areas that may exist and to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each form of SEM.

Some people believe that SEM involves Pay-Per-Click advertising exclusively and others’ are of the belief that SEM has to do with Organic search results, but the fact of the matter is it actually involves both areas. If you are not familiar with the terms PPC and Organic results don’t despair, because I will now expound on these elements.

Pay-per-Click (PPC) Advertising:

From the screenshot above you will notice that I searched using the key phrase “search engine marketing” and specific results have been generated by Google. At the top of the results page and toward the right I have placed a red box around specific results.

A distinctive element about these particular ads is that they have been paid for by an advertiser who has bid on the keyword “search engine marketing”. And if you click on one of these ads, the advertiser is charged a certain amount for that click, hence the name Pay-Per-Click Advertising.

Advantages of PPC

This type of adverting allows the advertiser to drive targeted traffic to his/her site

The traffic can literally begin flowing to the site minutes after an ad is placed

It serves as an excellent resource to build a brand or an email list and can help generate sales at a rapid pace

Disadvantages of PPC

It can be a costly investment especially for those who are inexperienced

Higher competition keywords are almost impossible to bid on because they are to expensive, which limits the exposure for businesses with smaller advertising budgets

Many people who click these ads are information seekers and not buyers

Organic Search Engine Results:

Using the exact search term as the example above I have now highlighted an area in the screenshot that is directly below the PPC ads. These results are what are known as the organic or natural search results.

Traffic generated from the organic results is highly valued in the eyes of webmasters because the traffic is essentially free. However, there will be cost attributed to actually gaining increased ranking in the search engines by means of what is known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Advantages of Organic Rankings

Traffic is free and depending on certain competitive variables the traffic can become a passive stream

Traffic can be laser targeted to the keywords your site is optimized for

Disadvantages of Organic Rankings

Achieving organic rankings is an indefinite process

The cost of hiring SEO firms can add up fairly quickly

The stability of your rankings is never guaranteed

PPC, and organic search engine rankings is the crux of what search engine marketing is. Both these traffic sources provide certain benefits, but the approach you embrace in SEM will be dependent on your business needs as well as the size of your budget.

There we go class; the above mentioned discourse should provide the basic knowledge to help you understand the two forms of Search Engine Marketing.

This is a guest post by Neil Jones, who specializes in launching ecommerce sites, he is currently plying his trade as head of marketing for eMobileScan.

Whether you just soft-launched your products or having your business running for ages, you certainly want to put in more and more sales and profit. And one of the most effective ways is using a media that gathers a lot of people. Before the internet, people use radios, TVs, newspapers to create a buzz on their products. With the presence of the internet, people can reach more with less cost, name them email marketing, search engine marketing, direct advertising. All them provide a significant result and even more compared to conventional methods. As the idea of community based website develops, blogs have been a lucrative medium to not only create a brand awareness of your product, but also to educate the society about the product. If you haven’t tried this type of advertising or having difficulties on choosing the specific blog to promote your product, let me tell you of SnapBomb, one of the best sources you can go to. Read on..

SnapBomb can help you creating buzz all over millions of blogs. In addition to SEO and PPC ads, blog marketing offers more coverage such as:

Longterm clicks – the links are around for as long as the blog is online

Visibility via search engines – spiders are quick to crawl blogs and include the content in search results

SEO value – lots of links from lots of relevant, valuable blogs translates to better search engine positioning

Higher conversion rates – bloggers that are passionate about the product they blog about have an audience that shares the passion

Non repetitive ads – every blogger will have a different twist on the campaign keeping the messaging interesting

Supported with its powerful features, it is easier to increase your content’s visibility and valuable backlinks to your site. By allowing bloggers to have full editorial control what they write, you can expect an excellent feedback on your products and services and learn from your customers all while creating buzz and driving more people to your website. SnapBomb is simple to use and allows you to target specific types of customers getting more value out of your advertising budget.

These are the points of what advertisers can do with SnapBomb:

Creating buzz and promoting company, events, web site, products or services on millions of blogs.

Giving increased visibility and valuable backlinks to their site.

Getting feedback on products and services.

Targetting specific types of customers to get more value from their advertising dollar.

Results in improving business revenue.

And to give out the best to advertisers, SnapBomb allows advertisers to create and manage campaigns easily and track the success through the free Buzz Analytics tool. It will give you insight into how good is your buzz? How do you stack up against your competitors? Here’s a screenshot to give you some figures (click on them for a bigger view).

This one above pictures HomeBiz Resource’s buzz compared to the other four sites. It’s #2 with the rating of 166. The good thing is, the information is updated daily! So it’ll reflect a more accurate picture of your buzz.

The second one below gives me infomation on the keywords I’m targetting. How much people talk about it, gives me a portrait of how popular the keyword is.

After knowing your positions, you can immediately set your campaign. Upon setting one, you are given a choice of keywords you want to target, blog’s PageRank criteria and feedback rating beside of standard information like campaign name, landing page, budget, etc.

To measure the effect of blog marketing Snapbomb launched a campaign in mid February to attract bloggers to write about the Snapbomb service. The results after half a month:
- 102 sponsored blog posts and an additional 85 that were not sponsored
- Google search shows 7,590 hits, Yahoo search shows 24,800 hits – starting from 0

If that’s not as much as necessary, you can read how blog marketing can be good mixture with search engine marketing in advertising.

If you’re curious about YayClick, you can read my previous post on this new media of advertising.

Get the picture already? Good . Here’s another one you will get if you’re looking to advertise your product or anything you want others to see.

Their advertising system works like this. Users must click and view an advert for a period of 30 seconds, and they are then rewarded for doing so. This greatly increases the exposure of your website or business, because the user simply cannot ignore the advert. You can go to their advertise page to get some information about the advertising price structure.

Obviously, you don’t want to use up your budget untargeted and spend it on fraud clicks, do you? I know and they do too. To prevent automated and fraudulent clicks, The YayClick development team have approximately 9 different unique methods for detecting automated clicks. These detection methods are so specific to automation tools, that a normal human browser simply cannot trigger them. And they are so confident in their systems they even challenge you if you can provide a working demonstration that bypasses their detection methods, they will refund your advertising payments.

Your advert will be shown once your site has been approved, and payment has cleared. Depending on the method of payment, this entire process usually occurs within 24 hours.

These are some of the features and security methods to make your advertising worth the investment in YayClick. To find more about advertising in YayClick, you can read their advertiser’s FAQ or read on another success story.

Join Now or find out how much do viewers earn.

Many people usually doubt this kind of online advertising. Questions usually arise is whether their ads are watched by real people. Well, I should say some programs work and some other don’t. Depends on the program you joined, there are a lot of people made their sales and got sign-ups. Besides, when you signed up to ClixSense, you are registered as an ad viewer therefore you will see plenty of ads.

Initial set per click is $0.01 and maximum is $5.00. You can convert your earnings into advertising points which means less work for you. Higher paying ads will have better page placement than ads with lower pays. For example, a $0.01 ad will be under the $0.02 ad, so if your ads are placed on the first page, you will have more chance for clickers to view your ads. Since ad viewers are paid $0.01 to view your ads, they charge an additional 20% for themselves. Finally, it sums up to $6.00 (equal to the minimum spend) for 500 ad views.

Advertisers can choose to display their ads to premium members only or to all members. Also they can decide where they would like their ads to be displayed (choices are North, South, Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania). This feature enables you to experiment with which is the best market for your products. Once you’ve discovered them, you can see sales flowing to tour account!

From what I know and some of the advertisers experience, ClixSense works well to promote products such as online money making product, methods that teach people to make money working from home, free program affiliation and such. Concluded, ClixSense is a prospective program to place your ads. Because it is so cheap, cost effective and one sale is often several times more than enough to pay for its advertising, you might want to increase your advertising amount while keep improving your pitches and sales copy and determining more products appeal to ClixSense members.

You can also advertise on ClixSense without spending a dime from your pocket!
