Busby SEO Test – Adding Nofollow Without Changing Wordpress Codes

January 26, 2009, filed under Blogging Insights

Today I took a look at my stats and I saw many people were searching for how to add nofollow to special links. What I mean by special links are “read more” links, author links, tags links, etc. The links are usually generated by php functions and people tend to go for the Wordpress core in order to add the nofollow tags. It shouldn’t be a problem if they know what they’re doing. But they need to rewrite the modifications as soon as Wordpress releases an update to maintain the nofollow effect.

I used to change the codes in Wordpress core too. But since I found this, the Add Link Attribute plugin, I don’t need to modify any of Wordpress files and the nofollow will remain in effect throughout WP updates.

I explained how to add nofollow to various links generated by Wordpress PHP functions like tag links, edit post links, author’s posts links, links in the comment section. Basically, all you need to do is rewriting the original code in the form that Add Link Attribute function understands. Learn how to translate the codes on Adding NoFollow to Any Links Generated by WordPress.

However, I haven’t managed to add nofollow to the categories links using the plugin. If there’s any of you know how to do so, feel free to add to the conversation and I’ll update this article and give you the credits.

Note: If you want to add nofollow to ALL outgoing links automatically, you can use this plugin, External Links by Semiologic.

If you want to add nofollow to ALL links, outgoing and internal inside your article, use the Add Link Attribute I mentioned above and replace this code:

<?php the_content(__('Read more'));?>

with this:

<?php add_link_attr('the_content', 'Read more', 'rel="nofollow"');?>

Let me know if there’s a problem.

That’s great but is it wise to nofollow internal links on your own site? I thought nofollow was really for external links?

Louis Liem on 2009-03-03 13:04:06 said

You can apply nofollow for any links. I use nofollow for links leading to administrative links like login (if any), edit posts, edit comments and links to feed and feed subscribing. Moreover, I also use nofollow for tag archives.

I did nofollowed the category archives but then I found out it’s better to leave the followed :) I guess it depends on which page you want to rank higher than others.

i prefer to change the code in certain posts when applying a “nofollow” tag to particular links than using a plugin that will apply the “nofollow” tag to all links.

The purpose of google and other search engines is to bring the most valid and relevant information to the forefront of the engines to benefit potential visitors…it just seems like this is all a way to cheat the system..

Google itself came up with the nofollow tag so site owners can have more control about how their sites link to others. So no, it’s not cheating at all, just effectively using the system as it was intended.

It amazes me that there is still no option in WP to simply add a “nofollow” tags to selected links. All I’m trying to do right now is find a simple way to add “nofollow” to my about,contact,policy pages.. Without using a plugin.

whats the point for adding a no follow link? I never actually understood it. What does it matter if its a follow or no follow. I know what they mean, i just dont get why someone would go out of their way to add a no-follow
