Barack Obama’s Foster Sister While He Was In Indonesia
January 20, 2009, filed under News and Rumors
Obama’s childhood was partly spent in Indonesia. He stayed there for four years until 1971. Many people are familiar with the story mentioning his Indonesian step father, Lolo Soetoro but not much have heard about another member of the family while in Indonesia.
This time, it’s not directly related to Obama or as near as the family relationship between Barack and Lolo. But the memories are still intact and this particular person was also in joy knowing Obama’s victory in the US election.

Mbak Non (51), Obama used to call her, which means “Big sis Non” in english – also known as Lia is Obama’s foster sister while he was in Indonesia. In the picture is Mbak Non a.k.a Lia holding a monkey puppet Obama gave her.
In 1966, seven years old Lia ran away from home and found herself confused and clueless in a residential in Bogor which belongs to Mrs. Siti. Turned out that Mrs. Siti was a house keeper for the couple Lolo Soetoro and Stanley Ann Dunham in Jakarta. When Mrs. Dunham picked up Mrs. Siti to Jakarta, she asked that Lia can come with her as a foster daughter.
Two years later, Mr. Soetoro brought Barry from the US. In the beginning, Lia refused to have Barry as a foster brother since he was dark skinned and unable to speak Indonesian. But Mrs. Dunham convinced Lia that Barry was going to be a good little brother.
Seven months later, Barry started to speak Indonesian fluently and he called Lia, Mbak Non. One of his hobbies was to mime Indonesia’s longest ruler’s speech, Soeharto.
Everytime Soeharto made a public speech, Barry notes every word and performing it in front of the whole house.
Barry and Lia also shared the same bedroom and Barry always wanted that Lia and him woke up together. If Lia got up first and left Barry in the room, he’ll got angry.
Then Barry tied my hands and his with a long rope. If one of us woke up first, he/she was allowed to leave the room upon waking up the other.
On 1971, Barry returned to Hawaii and Lia came along for three months. Both of them spent a lot of time in the beaches or shopping malls.
Towards his inauguration, Lia received a notice that she was going to be invited by Obama’s success team. But, here’s no follow up until today. Even so, she is excited that her previously annoying little brother is being the President of the United States.
